The Knowledge Hub – part 3 :User Experience (UX)

The Knowledge Hub – part 3 :User Experience (UX)

I thought it was probably about time to post an update about the Knowledge Hub; I’ve had my head under the bonnet of the technology for longer than I had intended and given the proximity of the Beta release in April this year I should probably surface for air and reorientation. Background Given it’s been a couple of months since I last posted on this topic, a quick recap on what this is all about: The concept for the Knowledge…

Communities of Practice leading the way in public service improvement

Communities of Practice leading the way in public service improvement

Rounding out another year of growth and innovation in the use of social media, this item provides a compelling case study for the success of Communities of Practice as a foundation for more effective collaborative working. I’m privileged to have been one of the catalysts for establishing this strategy for UK local government. In fact, I’ve been an advocate for Communities of Practice since long before they were made fashionable by Etienne Wenger et al, tracing my involvement back to…

The Knowledge Hub and Linked Data in Local Government

The Knowledge Hub and Linked Data in Local Government

This is a presentation I did for the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO-UK) for their conference on 14th September 2010 on the topic “The Future of Knowledge Organization on the Web”. The presentation covers the issues faced by users who need to connect and join-up online conversations and information from multiple networks and websites in order to gain domain specific insight and knowledge. Conversations are becoming increasingly disaggregated; useful data is disconnected and lacks context. The Knowledge Hub connects…

Knowledge Hub (part 2)

Knowledge Hub (part 2)

It’s taken a while for me to get around to posting an update to my “Knowledge Hub Part 1” post, mainly as a result of being fully immersed in the technology procurement process these past several months. This phase is now almost complete and we will shortly be starting on the actual development of the Hub, so now seems to be an opportune moment to remind everyone what this Knowledge Hub thing is, and to give a first airing of…

I was encouraged by the interest in this project from such a wide variety of users. Some challenging questions as well – all available at the Facilitation Now! conference 26th Feb. Thanks to…

Communities of Practice in Local Government

Communities of Practice in Local Government

It’s always pleasing to get some good publicity about how Communities of Practice are reshaping the way that local government works; creating new opportunities for knowledge sharing, collaboration and co-creation. The article in e-government bulletin says it all, and indeed I was one of the panel of three who were invited to judge the entries for the CoP of the Year award mentioned in the article.  A very difficult decision I might add, since all of the entries demonstrated the…
