Knowledge Hub Data and Apps Workshop

Knowledge Hub Data and Apps Workshop

This blog post is to thank all of the participants (presenters and delegates) to the Knowledge Hub Data & Apps workshop that was held in London yesterday (27 April 2011). The workshop was used to establish the foundations for the “KHub Data and Apps Advisory Group”, who we are hoping will help us to shape the forthcoming data/apps developments for the Knowledge Hub. As readers of my previous posts about the Knowledge Hub may be aware, the first (Beta) release…

Introduction to the Knowledge Hub

Introduction to the Knowledge Hub

As we approach the first (Beta) release of the Knowledge Hub, a project that has consumed my very existence as lead consultant for these past 2 years, I thought I would share a presentation I put together for the Knowledge Hub Conference that was held on 1st March 2011 (yes, a month ago, but still relevant).  My previous blogs on this topic… Knowledge Hub 4 – Social Graph and Activity Stream Knowledge Hub 3 – User Experience Knowledge Hub 2…

Knowledge Hub – part 4: Social Graph and Activity Stream

Knowledge Hub – part 4: Social Graph and Activity Stream

Continuing with my posts about the Knowledge Hub (Beta release in April 2011): Knowledge Hub 3 – User Experience Knowledge Hub 2 Knowledge Hub 1 I wanted to touch on another of the key features being delivered by the new system, the ‘Social Graph’ and ‘Activity Stream’. These are intimately related and hence it makes sense to discuss them as one feature or capability. Social Graph A social graph in its broadest context is the mapping of everyone and how…

The Knowledge Hub – part 3 :User Experience (UX)

The Knowledge Hub – part 3 :User Experience (UX)

I thought it was probably about time to post an update about the Knowledge Hub; I’ve had my head under the bonnet of the technology for longer than I had intended and given the proximity of the Beta release in April this year I should probably surface for air and reorientation. Background Given it’s been a couple of months since I last posted on this topic, a quick recap on what this is all about: The concept for the Knowledge…

Salesforce.com aquires DimDim web conferencing company

Salesforce.com officially announced today its acquisition of Indian web conferencing company Dimdim for approximately $31 million in cash. Communities of Practice leading the way in public service improvement

Communities of Practice leading the way in public service improvement

Rounding out another year of growth and innovation in the use of social media, this item provides a compelling case study for the success of Communities of Practice as a foundation for more effective collaborative working. I’m privileged to have been one of the catalysts for establishing this strategy for UK local government. In fact, I’ve been an advocate for Communities of Practice since long before they were made fashionable by Etienne Wenger et al, tracing my involvement back to…

Knowledge Hub Linked Data Spend App.

The confluence of a number of initiatives around the UK Government’s transparency agenda has opened up a significant and exciting opportunity to deliver the first of a number of applications that will be made available in the Knowledge Hub App Store. The foundations for this initiative include: 1. The transparency agenda requirement for all authorities to openly publish spending data in reusable from January 2011 onwards. 2.  Announcement about the publication of Government spending data 3. LG Group Practitioner Guide to…

The Knowledge Hub and Linked Data in Local Government

The Knowledge Hub and Linked Data in Local Government

This is a presentation I did for the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO-UK) for their conference on 14th September 2010 on the topic “The Future of Knowledge Organization on the Web”. The presentation covers the issues faced by users who need to connect and join-up online conversations and information from multiple networks and websites in order to gain domain specific insight and knowledge. Conversations are becoming increasingly disaggregated; useful data is disconnected and lacks context. The Knowledge Hub connects…

CoP Usability and Sociability Heuristics

CoP Usability and Sociability Heuristics

As some of my regular readers will know, I’m involved in a major new project to deliver the ‘next generation’ community of practice platform for UK local government organisations, see previous blog posts about the ‘Knowledge Hub’. The current platform has been (and continues to be) a huge success, with over 63,000 users and more than 1,300 active CoPs, working towards various outcomes but with a common goal to improve public service. These will eventually be migrated to the new…
